Main Street - Ann Arbor MichiganI love getting out early to photograph in Ann Arbor. The 'blue hour' is my favorite time to shoot city scapes as there are fewer people and cars moving about, and the pre-dawn light enables me to emphasize the color and texture of the architecture and neon lights. This image features a view of Main Street looking south from Liberty Street toward the the First National Bank building, the large building in the background. The Pretzel Bell restaurant as well as other downtown shops are visible in the image as well. Located near University of Michigan campus, this area of town is home to many local favorite shops and restaurants.

Old Barn - Lodi Township, MichiganThis barn is located just south of Ann Arbor, Michigan. I have driven past it for the better part of fifteen years, watching it deteriorate a little more each year. As anyone from the area would recognize, this photograph is actually about eight years old - as of now the barn has all but collapsed. This image was created on a late October evening, just before sunset. I have this print displayed in my office on a 16 x 24 black edge canvas wrap, a medium which I prefer for this type of subject.Update: As of fall 2020, this barn has been torn down and the debris removed. I miss seeing in on my way home….

The area is home to many shops, museums, restaurants and pubs. it is a great place for a night out for dinner and drinks, one of the many summer festivals or just a leisurely stroll to admire the architecture.

The Ark - Music Venue in Ann Arbor MichiganLocated near the University of Michigan campus, The Ark is a nationally renown acoustic and folk music venue. It has been open in various locations in Ann Arbor since 1965 and hosts over 300 shows a year. Able to accommodate more patrons than many bars or clubs (seats around 400), but is still small enough to allow for an intimate experience listening to live music.

Located not far from the University of Michigan campus, the Fleetwood originally opened in 1949 as the Dagwood Diner and was Ann Arbor's first sidewalk cafe. It was renamed to Fleetwood in 1971, and remains a local favorite for early breakfasts or late nigh snacks.

Close to University of Michigan campus, it hosts both current and older movies, appealing to a wide variety of movie tastes. This image was taken on particularly cold, icy and rainy New Years Eve - which probably explains the lack of people and activity. Normally this area is bustling with students and shoppers.

It does make it more challenging to select a spot to take photographs. I really love the way the reflection of the sun off the buildings, fence and rails adds to the warm summers morning feel of this image.

The mural has since been painted over. Unfortunately - at least for some of us, the tone/ambiance of Ann Arbor is changing to include many new and high rise (relative of course) building, causing many local iconic buildings to be razed in the name of progress. I suppose.
